FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Loyalist College Sign

A statement from David O'Neil, Ontario Liberal Party candidate for the Bay of Quinte riding, on the recent announcement that Loyalist College is suspending programs due to funding issues.

I am deeply saddened to hear that Loyalist College's Board of Governors has been forced to suspend programs. Doug Ford's Conservative government is eroding our public post-secondary education, and limiting opportunities for people in our region. Without adequate funding for our schools, Loyalist College has relied on international students for increased revenue – a temporary solution that was never sustainable.

Loyalist College has been forced to suspend advanced programs in Biotechnology, Financial Technology, and Cloud Computing, which equip people in our region with skills for higher-paying careers. As a small business owner, I understand the importance of managerial skills and education for business success. Cutting management programs in Culinary, Esthetics, Events, and Business Administration reduces educational opportunities for people to learn the skills they need to run successful, locally owned and operated businesses.

As Member of Provincial Parliament, I will ensure funding to keep our public colleges open and thriving, providing programs and learning opportunities for people in our region. This commitment will ensure our residents, and our communities, can grow and prosper.
